Pioneer Summer Camp for Kids
presented by Philip Foster Farm
by Elane Johnson
School has been out for less than a month, and already I’ve seen the look on parents’ faces around town. You know the look: glazed, desperate, slightly crazed. Happens every year when parents realize they have to entertain their children all day, every day, all summer long. Fortunately, Philip Foster Farm National Historic Site in Eagle Creek, Oregon, has the solution. Pioneer Summer Camp!
Children, ages 7-12, will dress in period clothing and bring history alive at this popular 1800's stop off the Oregon Trail on the Barlow Road. They’ll learn pioneer skills from experienced crafters—rope-making, gardening, blacksmithing, wood fire cooking, animal care, sewing, story-telling, music and more. The week-long day camps begin June 29 and run through July 31, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Mondays-Fridays. Each Friday, from 3-5 p.m., children will share what they’ve learned at the family recital.
The camps cost $200 and include a refundable $50 deposit for the use of a gender/age appropriate authentic costume. Your children will have so much fun, they’ll never realize they’re learning during the summer. I won’t tell if you won’t.
Philip Foster Farm National Historic Site is located at 29912 S.E. Hwy. 211, Eagle Creek—(503) 637-6324. www.philipfosterfarm.com.
The Wade Creek House in Estacada hosts
second-Saturday outdoor antique market
Beginning Saturday, June 13, and every second Saturday in July, August and September, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., an open air antique market will be held on the grounds of The Wade Creek House, 664 N.W. Wade Street, Estacada—(503) 630-7556. Vendors of antique and vintage furniture, house wares, and whatnot have been invited to pitch a tent and set up shop. Admission is free.
“We’re hoping this regular outdoor antique market becomes an Estacada tradition and attraction for visitors,” says Becky McFarland, owner of The Wade Creek House. “I can’t wait to see what kind of treasures come and go on market day.”
Anyone with antiques and vintage furnishings they’d like to sell can be a vendor. If you are interested in renting a space, call the shop right away or visit www.thewadecreekhouse.com for more information. Vendor space is still available.
This first market of the season will also feature JOHN DEERE IS HERE. Just in time for Father’s Day. A Boring, Oregon collector of vintage John Deere toys, clothing, and memorabilia is selling his entire collection. There will be a wide selection of collectibles that make great gifts for Dad—or yourself.
Bring the whole family and celebrate with your Dad. Coffee and food vendors will be selling refreshments, and classic John Deere tractors will be on display for that photo op with Dad or Grandpa.
The Wade Creek House is located on old Eagle Creek Highway across the street from the Estacada Library and Wade Creek Park. Open Wednesday-Sunday, The Wade Creek House sells antiques, collectibles, country home and garden décor, and hand-crafted gifts. The shop is run like a co-op by members who are dedicated to making shopping fun. “Our shop sits on an acre lot and we have the space to hold community events like this one,” said Becky.
